How to explain your #hairgoals to your stylist

Trust me, I totally get it. Going to a new hairstylist can be terrifying. What if they don't get what I'm trying to say? Can my hair even look like this picture? What do you mean I can't be this blonde? We've all been through the emotions of seeing a new stylist, the excitement when they absolutely nail it and the let down when you didn't get what you wanted. While not every look is achievable in one session, I want to share some tips so that you and your stylist are on the same page before they even touch your hair. 

First and foremost, look for a stylist who specializes in whatever service you are looking for. Check out their work on social media, and don't be afraid to read their reviews. That's what's great about the internet, you have access to hundreds of stylists in your area that you can research before ever even requesting an appointment. 

The next best part about the internet: photos! Yes! We want you to bring in photos. I love when a client shows me their entire pinterest board of hair inspiration. For me, that's better than one single photo. I can get a feel for the type of hair they like by seeing multiple photos of things they simply like. What's also great, pictures of hair you DON'T like. Yes! If you hate that bold money piece that's super trendy right now, I want to know that. 

With pictures also comes Filters, FaceTune and the game of Instagram perfection. Trust your stylist when they tell you what is or isn't achievable. Almost every picture you see on IG has some type of filter over it. We all do it! Some people filter for the perfect hair tone, some people like the way their skin looks smoother, some want a consistent feed... whatever the reason, know that that icy white hair isn't going to stay that perfect without a lot of upkeep. 

One of my favorite questions to ask during a consultation is do you want to be seen as a brunette or a blonde? That's a really important factor when coloring hair. Dimension is key in almost every hair color, but what do you want the world to see you as can determine a lot about your color placement. 

Another huge factor is the look of your color. Do you want natural or bold highlights? How often are you willing to come in for upkeep? How much time and money are you willing to invest in your look? These are all important factors during your consultation. My goal for all guests isn't just to love their hair when they leave, but for weeks to come. 

Above all, make sure you and your stylist are a good fit. If you feel you aren't on the same page, don't be afraid to say something before they get started. Your stylist should want you to fall in love with your hair, so make sure that is their top priority and they provide it in an environment where you can relax and enjoy yourself.
